Choosing your baby carrier

"Which carrier should I buy?"

It's probably the most common question asked in #babywearing groups.

There are so many options out there when you Google - how can you work it all out?

This week there was some chat about a particular brand of carrier which is popping up lately. A quick search revealed you too can own one for a mere $AU5000 😮 . Now it wasn't quite constructed using unicorn tears but some fibres used in the fabric aren't terribly far off.

Baby carriers are tools, not artworks. They are sucked on, chucked on, dropped on the dirt. They are out and about in rain and sunshine and can be lost or left behind. They are neither an investment nor an asset.

No family should spend money they cannot afford on a high-end baby carrier. Brands who market their products as aspirational lifestyle choices do a disservice to #babywearing.

First set a realistic budget for your family. And consider buying pre-loved.

Become familiar with baby carrier safety recommendations and respected brands in the industry.

Review the basic styles of baby carrier and consider which best suit your needs. Assess how flexible it is to adjust with your growing baby.

Finally - with a short list in hand, consider the aesthetics. Comfort colour and design. If you don't love using it, you won't use it.

Trying a range of options before you buy can make all the difference. Get along to a #babywearing meet. Make an appointment with a local #babywearingconsultant or seek out a #bricksandmortar shop where staff have training in babywearing.
