Sleep is Sleep

Sleep is Sleep. Yet the myth of "junk sleep" continues to be perpetuated by sleep trainers.

Not only do babies sleep well when carried, many sleep better. It is likely the combination of parental contact and the rhythmic movement of the adult support infants to transition between sleep cycles.

Infant sleep is different to that of adults. While our typical cycle is 90 minutes, a baby's is just 40 minutes. And around half of that is in a very light, active sleep stage. This means they are sensitive to stimulus before they go into a deep sleep phase and as they come out of it.

When you carry your sleeping baby in a baby carrier, you can respond to these changes vocally (making shushing sounds ) and physically (patting, rocking) and help them roll into a second or even third cycle.

A baby sleeping out of arms-reach may wake fully and cry to signal to their mother and are less likely to resettle.

Babies can be carried for some or all naps or #wrapnaps can be combined with #contactnapping and #conapping.

Around the world, for thousands of years, babies have been carried for daytime sleep and sleep in contact with the mother's breast at night. Biologically normal and definitely not bad habits!
